Number Eleven
I call this one "Refraction". It's all because of the way that light reacts with the surfaces. The wood is figured Maple, commonly called "Flamed Maple". The stripes that appear in the wood are the result of the grain changing direction in ribbon-like patterns. These patterns shift depending on the angle that the light strikes them, refracting the light based on its incident angle.
The same refraction of light occurs on the pendulum, which is made of a stone called Labradorite. When viewed from one angle the stone appears as a neutral grey, but when the light catches it at the right angle the stone lights up dramatically in brilliant shades of electric blue and gold, as if lit from inside.
The characteristics of the wood and stone along with the charm of polished brass led me to fashion this clock in a minimalist style - Simple forms with little embellishment so as not to take away from the qualities of the materials. It has no dial. Instead it is faced with plexiglas to allow the brass movement to be part of the expression of the aesthetic.
