Number Ten

Another battery-operated clock.  I am not enamoured of battery clocks.  For me there is no romance in these plastic movements, even though they can be accurate reliable timepieces.  So if I am going to make a clock with such a movement it needs to be special in other ways.

I had some salvaged Black Cherry wood in the shop and it seemed to be calling out to be fashioned into a clock.  I spent several evenings sketching out ideas, but nothing spoke to me.  A phone call took me away from my sketching, and while chatting I found myself doodling on a scrap of paper.  When the telephone call completed I was looking at Number 10 - it had revealed itself as I chatted.

One of the special elements in this clock is the finish.  The technique used is from a bygone era.  Cabinet makers of yore used a number of methods to season wood and enhance its colour, including burying the wood in manure for years.  The technique used here was the application of "caustic soda" which causes the pigments in the wood to oxidize, bringing forth a rich deep colour.  No stains or dyes were used, so the wood is exhibiting its natural beauty.   This has been preserved with a coating of natural shellac in the way it would have been done two hundred years ago.

Case is Black Cherry.  Dial is hand-hammered copper.
